Energy Drinks Raise Concerns

The rising popularity of highly caffeinated energy drinks is causing concern about their effect on children.

According to a Web MD article, 30 to 50 percent of adolescents and young adults report regular consumption of energy drinks.

And younger children drink them, too, which has led to an increase in reports of caffeine overdose. Energy drinks contain three to five times the amount of caffeine as an 8-ounce soda.

Camps and parents should be aware of the potential harmful effects of these drinks and discourage their use by children and teenagers.
