Stereotypes A Sore Subject

Sara,

I was shocked and disappointed when I received your recent July/August 2012 Camp Business magazine (“Boys Will Be Girls”).

Of course there are gender stereotypes, and of course there are gender misconceptions, but the solution is not to proclaim that it is because we are all on a sliding gender continuum.

Please stay away from this kind of moral, social foolishness—and give us camp directors camp resources and sound ideas—as you usually do.

Yes, we are in a cultural, moral war.  The two diverse positions are quite obvious.  Which side are you on?

Dear Brian,

We apologize if you found our article offensive. We just wanted to point out that gender stereotypes do exist and offer ways to combat them.

Thanks for your input and please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas with us anytime.

Sincerely,

Christine Schaffran

Magic Camp Takes Center Stage In Austin

Congratulations to Fantastic Magic Camp who was awarded the title of “Most Uniquely Austin” in Texas by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s Business Awards Dinner. The summer day camp was among 68 companies nominated for the designation—more than in any other category—before the pool was narrowed down to five finalists. According to the Austin Chamber of Commerce, winning this award means that Magic Camp “… embraces the unique Austin culture and exemplifies what it means to live and do business in Austin.”

The camp is celebrating its 20 th anniversary and Executive Director Bertil Fredstrom says he is looking forward to 20 more years. Best wishes and a round of applause on a job well done.
