Fired Up

As the world heats up, so do new problems. Suddenly, we’re finding our homes and camps are in areas prone to wildfires—places that have seemed safe for years, are now less so. We’ve seen this play out a couple different ways this summer.

Take the out-of-control wildfires in Canada. It was strange to see New York City shrouded in the distinctive haze of wildfire smoke. We’re used to that out here in the west—it’s basically our July and August, but to see it in New York was shocking. It proves that even places seemingly immune to wildfire damage can be impacted.

Or take Maui. The images coming out of the fires burning so hot and quick, fueled by an offshore hurricane (one that is passing hundreds of miles from the island) are horrific. The common sentiment from folks impacted by the fire are shock and awe. The fire spread so quickly and did so much damage to the island’s communication system, people were unprepared to fight it.

Over and over, you hear people who have been impacted by wildfire say things like, “I didn’t think that could happen here.” Or “We’ve never had fires here before.”

The reality is wildfires can happen most anywhere. The good news is you can take steps to prevent wildfire damage and protect your campers. Chances are, if you’ve recently gone through a risk-management audit, you’ve been instructed on how to better prepare your camp for the day you face a fire problem.

If you haven’t, or if you’d like to learn more, we had one of our writers spend time talking with a fire-prevention expert, getting a rundown on all the do’s and don’ts you’ll want to keep in mind for your camp.

I hope you like the story—as well as the rest of the topics we take on this month.

If you do, or if you don’t, let us know.

Till next month…
